The Library as a Center for Teaching and Learning

The Val A. Browning Library exists to support teaching and learning at Dixie State College of Utah. We provide support for you and your students in a variety of ways.

Library Instruction: Librarians offer a variety of basic and customized instruction classes that assist students and faculty in effective use of library resources. To arrange for subject specific instruction, contact your library liaison to arrange for a session in the library or in your classroom. Faculty are encouraged to participate in the planning for the session and in the session itself as this highlights its importance for your students.

Scheduling the Library Classroom: To book the library classroom, you will need to enter your request through the Library Classroom Calendar. If this is your first time to submit a request, you will need to set up an account (remember to note the user name and password) in Appointment Quest and request the classroom. If library instruction is needed, please specify that as part of the request. The library classroom exists as a teaching lab to support faculty across the curriculum. We therefore limit bookings of the classroom to four times a semester per class. Exceptions may be granted by the Dean of the library, Daphne Selbert.

Bringing your class to the library: You are welcome to bring your class to the library at any time. We do have limited seating, so ask that if you bring an entire class for research purposes that students distribute themselves between the upstairs and downstairs computer areas so that students who have come for reference assistance will have seating as well. If you wish to interact with your class in the library, you may want to consider the Collaborative Learning area in the basement.

Reference librarians appreciate advance notification (x2081) when you plan to bring your class to the library for research. This helps avoid conflicts with scheduled classes as well as ensures that the needed materials are accessible.

Collaborative Learning Area: The collaborative learning area in the basement has movable chairs and tables, as well as a white board. You and your students are welcome to use the area, provided it is not in use by other groups of students.

Instructional Technologist: Are you looking for ways to better use technology in your teaching? Josh Stanley, Instructional Technologist, is available to support this effort. Contact him by phone (x7863) or email (stanley@dixie.edu) to arrange for an appointment.

Your suggestions are always welcome! Contact your library liaison or Daphne Selbert, Dean / Director, to give us ideas on how we can provide you with better service for you and your students.
