    MLA Style Citations : Books


    Book Citation

    • Remember to always end all citations with a period.

      Author's Last Name, First Name Middle Initial. Title of Book:

      Subtitle of Book. edition. Place of Publication:

      Publisher, Year.

      Examples:

     

    Ermann, M. David, Mary B. Williams, and Michael S. Shauf, eds.

    Computers, Ethics, and Society. New York: Oxford UP,

    1997. Odell, Lee, et al. Elements of Language. Austin, TX:

    Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 2001.

    Sternberg, Elaine. Just Business: Business Ethics in Action. New

    York: Oxford UP, 2000.

    Utah Association of Counties. Utah County Facts Book. Salt Lake

    City,UT: Utah Association of Counties, 1981.


    Authors

    • The first part of a book citation is the author(s), which is the same for all formats of materials. See Authors page for more information.

     

    Book Title

    • The title is the name of the work
    • Underline the title and subtitle (Italics may be used but underlining is recommended for clarity)
    • Capitalize title according to conventions: Capitalize all words except A, an, the, of, to, on, at and similar words that are capitalized only if they appear at the the beginning of the title or subtitle
    • End the title section with a period
    • Underline does not continue under the period

     

    Author. Title.

    Example:

    Lester, Kent and Dave McGuerty. The Complete Guide to

    Contracting Your Home.

    Subtitle

    • Some books have a subtitle that follows the title after a
      colon (:)
    • Capitalize the subtitle the same as a title
    • Punctuate the title and subtitle as it appears except for the addition of the colon between title and subtitle

     

    Author. Title: Subtitle.

    Example:

    Saslant, Katherine. The Brand-New House Book: Everything You

    Need to Know About Planning, Designing, and Building a

    Custom, Semi-Custom, or Production-Built House.

    Edition

    If there is an edition, it is added after the title and subtitle.
    Do not list first editions unless there are subsequent editions already in print.
    The format is: 2nd ed., 3rd ed., etc.

    Author. Title. edition.

    Example:

    Lester, Kent and Dave McGuerty. The Complete Guide to

    Contracting Your Home. 3rd ed.

    Publication Information

    • Publication information is listed after the author, title, and edition
    • Includes the place of publication, publisher, and date of publication
    • This information is usually found on the front and back of a book's title page
    • A simple place to locate this information is in the library catalog record for your book

     

    Place of Publication

    • Do not list states for commonly known cities such as
      New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc.
    • If state is needed, use the common two letter abbreviation (UT, NY, CA, etc.)
    • List countries only if needed for clarity
    • If more than one place is listed, use only the first
    • After place of publication put a colon ( : )

    Example:

    Kardon, Redwood, Michael Casey, and Douglas Hansen. Code

    Check: A Field Guide to Building a Safe House. 3rd ed.

    Newtown, CT:

    Publisher

    • Omit common business and publishing industry names such as "Books","Press", "Publisher", "Inc.", "Co.", and "Ltd."
    • Place a comma After the Publisher
    • University Press is abbreviated UP

     

    Author. Title. Place of Publication: Publisher,

    Example:

    Kardon, Redwood, Michael Casey, and Douglas Hansen. Code

    Check: A Field Guide to Building a Safe House. 3rd ed.

    Newtown, CT: Taunton,

    Year of Publication

    • Do not include a copyright symbol (©) with the publication date
    • Include only the year of publication for book citations
    • After the year put a period -- because that's the end of a book citation

     

    Author. Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication.

    Example:

    Kardon, Redwood, Michael Casey, and Douglas Hansen. Code

    Check: A Field Guide to Building a Safe House. 3rd ed.

    Newtown, CT: Taunton, 2000.
